Pioneers in ecological sanitation

CompostEra was founded in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2007 by civil engineer Carl Lindström and built on his experience with composting toilet technology since the 1960s. Carl’s academic work at the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US focused on the thermodynamics of composting processes. Carl built on toilet composting solutions developed by his father, Richard Lindström, from the 1930s to avoid pollution in the Baltic Sea.

Today, CompostEra is based in Gävle, central Sweden. We have further refined the solution to develop the CompostEra 2.0 with improved drainage and resilience.

Mission

Our mission is to provide long-term composting toilet solutions that avoid pollution, protect precious water resources and recycle nutrients. Our systems are designed for comfort, durability, requiring minimal maintenance and costs over decades of use.

International development projects

CompostEra toilets can revolutionise sanitation for people all around the world by bringing cost-effective, waterless, pollution-free and comfortable toilets to people all around the world.

We believe that everyone deserves sustainable sanitation wherever they live. In countries with less developed infrastructure, our waterless toilets can be run off-grid with a solar powered fan for schools, public toilets, etc.
